High level disinfection and sterilization (HLD/S) has recently been identified as one of the four high risk areas by The Joint Commission and will receive increased focus during onsite surveys. Similar to many organizations around the country, we struggled with how to create a highly reliable process and structure for HLD/S across a large pediatric network. Activities at these locations vary and include pre-cleaning, manual cleaning, preparation and packaging, sterilization, high-level disinfection, and transportation. With a centralized governance structure in place, the HLD/S Program evolved to meet the needs of our organization by providing a competency based enterprise-wide program at local and organizational levels. This program, combined with a robust formalized structure, has streamlined communication, increased regulatory compliance, and improved patient safety.
Describe the assessment process and tools utilized in the development of the HLD/S Program.
Review the structure and key components of the HLD/S Program to enhance sustainability.
Identify recent changes to move toward centralization and the future of our Program.
